Grace Pearl Ingalls, the youngest daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls, died on May 10, 1941, at the age of 64. Born on May 23, 1877, in Burr Oak, Iowa, Grace’s life spanned the final decades of westward expansion and the early part of the 20th century.

When Did Grace Ingalls Die?

Grace Ingalls passed away on May 10, 1941, just shy of her 64th birthday. At the time of her death, she was living in South Dakota, where she had spent much of her life. Like her sisters, Grace remained close to her family throughout her life and helped care for her sister Mary during her later years.

A Quiet Life Rooted in Family

Though Grace was only a small child during the events described in the later Little House books, she grew into a devoted daughter, sister, and eventually wife. In 1901, she married Nathan Dow and settled into a quiet domestic life. She worked as a schoolteacher before her marriage and maintained close relationships with her sisters for the rest of her life.

Grace died peacefully and was buried in the De Smet Cemetery, alongside her parents and siblings. While she may not have received as much literary attention as Laura or Mary, her life embodied the values of steadiness, care, and perseverance that defined the Ingalls family.
