Caroline Ingalls was 40 years old when she gave birth to her youngest daughter, Grace Pearl Ingalls, on May 23, 1877. Born in Burr Oak, Iowa, Grace was the fifth and final child of Caroline and Charles Ingalls. Her birth came during a transitional and difficult period for the Ingalls family as they moved frequently in search of work and stability.
A Later-in-Life Frontier Birth
In the 19th century, having children well into one’s 30s or 40s was not uncommon, especially in rural America where large families were typical. Caroline, born on December 12, 1839, had already raised four children—Mary, Laura, Carrie, and a baby boy named Freddy who died in infancy—by the time Grace arrived.
Despite the challenges of frontier living, Caroline was known for her calm demeanor, inner strength, and fierce devotion to her children. Grace’s birth was another example of Caroline’s resilience and her ability to adapt to the demands of motherhood, even later in life and under less-than-ideal circumstances.
Life in Burr Oak, Iowa
At the time of Grace’s birth, the Ingalls family was living in Burr Oak, where Charles had taken a job managing the Masters Hotel. Unlike the homesteading life they had led in Walnut Grove and later in De Smet, this period in Burr Oak represented an effort to find steady work and income.
Grace was born in a relatively stable setting compared to the often harsh prairie conditions her older sisters had experienced. However, the family’s stay in Burr Oak was short-lived, and they eventually moved back to Walnut Grove before settling permanently in De Smet, Dakota Territory.
The Youngest of the Ingalls Sisters
As the baby of the family, Grace was cherished by her older siblings and parents alike. She was still a child when her father passed away in 1902 and lived much of her adult life in South Dakota. Grace later worked as a schoolteacher and married Nathan Dow in 1901. She passed away in 1941 at the age of 64.
While Grace appears only briefly in the later Little House books—such as By the Shores of Silver Lake and The First Four Years—her real-life story reflects the continued strength and endurance of the Ingalls family legacy.
